Suzuki V-Strom DL 650 – Long Test
TEST DRIVE - Suzuki

Manoeavrability, comfort and easy to drive. Suzuki V-Strom DL 650 does not pretend to be better than she is: this is a perfect motorcycle, which perfectly suits for who every rider who likes to have fun...a lot of fun!

A simple and aggressive design
Design looks simple and full-bodied at the same time. The front features quite a sports shape, which properly suits to the aggressive V-twin cylinder. Moreover, livery shows the same characteristics of all enduro motorcycle: a low and big seadle and a wide and high handling, designed to allow a comfortable rider's position also during long travels.
On the side, chassis is made of black colored alluminium, a technocal solution which recalls us Suzuki V-Strom DL 1000.
As far as suspensions are concerned, on the front we find a 43 mm diameter fork,
while at the rear the movement of the rear fork is characterized by a high lenght, and controlled by hydraulic shock absorbers.
Even braking system is well balanced, and it is supposed to have two front disks of 310 mm, and a single rear disk of 260 mm.

Tyres and wheels are the same of 1000 cc version: 19'' at the front, 17'' at the rear, with Bridgestone 110/80 and 150/70 tyres.

In conclusion, instruments are both traditional and modern. Tachometer is analogical, while another central panel is digital, and it gives many informations about engine's temperature, fuel level, km and hour.

Good hearthed
The engine which powers V-Strom 650 results from the unit that powered the renowned SV 650.
645 cc, 4 valves unit, electronic injection, liquid-cooled, V 90°.
According to all informations we have, peak power reaches 67 hp at 8800 RPM, while the peak torque reache 60 Nm at 6.400 RPM. As far as anti-pollution norms are concerned, Suzuki V-Strom DL 650 is Euro3.

A versatile motorcycle
On the highway, aerodynamics is really great, as it allows the rider to run at the right speed with low consumptions. Few gas, and low noise, two elements which could encourage the driver to run so...be careful!
Suspensions offer quite a soft and comfortable feeling, but they do not damage sports riding, which results really delightful.

The Japanese twin-cylinder engine is really great, perfectly in tune with the dynamic characteristics of V-Strom. Rear suspensions are very good, as also on peak inclination we don not feel any offhanded manoeuvre.
Vibrations are completely reduced, we can perceive them only at very high speed, but they are never pesky.
Also the braking system showed to be well balanced, compact and powerful, even on “extreme” situations.

ROAD TEST: SUZUKI DL650 V-STROM: Kicking up a strom

Confession time: I did not approach this motorcycle with an open mind. After six hours of riding at the Motorcycle Industry Association's Media Test Day I was grumpy and disinclined to throw my leg over a machine I had categorised as a cut-down, cut-price version of a successful larger brother.

Persistent nudging from a friend who has ridden a V-Strom daily for a year, combined with the tender entreaties of Suzuki's press team, barely persuaded me to try it.

I was still muttering obscenities into my visor when I reached the end of the long straight at Bedford Autodrome, braked savagely and threw the Suzuki into the turn at a pace I would not recommend on the tenth lap still less the first. That woke me up and the serenity with which the little all-rounder accepted such harsh treatment dramatically improved my mood as well.

The Suzuki DL650 V-Strom is the sort of motorcycle many riders walk straight past on their way to more exotic models. Its engine has been in use since 1999 in Suzuki's SV650 and its frame is taken straight from the V-Strom 1000. Unkind critics have called it ugly which exposes resistance to its utterly modern look, particularly the large, twin, multi-reflector headlights. But it is reluctance to test proven, pragmatic technology like this that puts so many motorcyclists on machines that are utterly unsuited to their needs and costs them money they do not need to spend.

If that hints that the V-Strom 650 is nothing more than a competent mechanical compromise it is grotesquely unfair. Suzuki try to encapsulate its potential by summarising it as a 'middleweight sport enduro tourer.' A better way of putting it is that this is a motorcycle you could ride to work in heavy traffic throughout the year and then take on a long touring holiday around Europe. Having arrived at your campsite in the Pyrenees you could then strip away the luggage and belt out for a few hours' jousting with sports bikes on hairpin bends.

The V-Strom 650 is 20kg lighter than its big brother and the seat is very slightly lower. But it is still a tall, imposing motorcycle that gets noticed on busy motorways and affords its rider an excellent view of the road ahead. Regular readers will know that I am obsessed with mirrors. I make no apology. They save lives. The Suzuki's are superb and they do not vibrate at high speed.

The twin cylinder engine is as smooth as anything installed in machines that cost thousands of pounds more and pulls eagerly up to the rev-limiter in the first five of its six slick gears. Suzuki have adjusted the performance characteristics to deliver increased torque between 4,000 and 6,500 rpm. The result is midrange pulling power that makes two-up travel entirely practical. The capacious pillion seat and moulded grab rails confirm that this bike need not be restricted to solo touring.

Nor is it exhausting over extended distances. The adjustable windshield provides good protection even at high, motorway speeds. I was very impressed by the quietness of the engine working through its two-into-one exhaust system. For an intimidating roar you have to rev through 8,000 rpm, but the bike will cruise at 80mph in 6th gear at about 5,800 rpm. Its capacious fuel tank offers a range of more than 200 miles. The suspension is at least as good as on the larger 1000cc model and in tight corners I would dare to suggest that it is better.

Too many superlatives? There is one more. Until August 31st Suzuki are offering customers the chance to ride away a V-Strom 650 for pounds 1 deposit. The offer also applies to the Bandit 650 and SV650 models.

Freshly qualified riders will not find the V-Strom intimidating. It is not supposed to set nerves-jangling nor is it a posing platform. But it is fun, fast, comfortable and secure. If your idea of motorcycling is to own something with an expensive name on the tank and take it out of the garage on alternate Sundays in June then this is not the bike for you. But if you yearn to explore over long range while developing your riding skills and you need a bike you can use around town too, then the V-Strom should be on your list to test alongside the excellent Ducati Multistrada 620, BMW F650 and Honda's much maligned but astonishingly competent Deauville.

There are not many riders left who do not know that Ewan McGregor circumnavigated the globe on a BMW. He chose a superb motorcycle, but he would have made it on a Suzuki DL 650 V-Strom. It is even available in a restricted version for young holders of the category 'A' motorcycle licence.

Potential adventurers who do not earn film star salaries would be daft not to arrange a test ride.

Vidim dosta vas vozi motore,a posto sam ja novi clan tek sada vidim ovu temu i bas mi je drago sto nas ima sve vise koji vozimo motore, jer to je jedna posebna strast i uzivanje u voznji.Ja inace strasno volim motore i dosta dobro se razumem u sve modele i marke motocikala.Trenutno vozim hondu 750 twin africu i hondu vfr800 vtec. Ako nekoga zanima neki model i bilo sta u vezi njega slobodno neka me pita, detaljno cu mu reci sve sto znam i preneti svoja iskustva.
